Benchmark Your Way to Better Lab Operational Practices

Updated: Oct 16, 2023

To help lab operators and engineers save energy, the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) has added a new module to its Laboratory Benchmarking Tool (LBT) that allows users to see how they stack up with other labs in terms of their energy-saving efforts.

The new LBT Operational Practices module goes beyond traditional energy benchmarking to allow users to compare policies and practices such as lab ventilation management plans, occupant engagement activities, high-performance fume hoods, and other technologies used in similar lab types. Users can see if they are ahead or behind the curve in terms of technology or policy adoption, which can help them in planning for future energy savings.

Combined with your energy benchmarking data, these operational practice comparisons can help generate action towards more sustainable labs. The module includes data on existing policies and practices from more than 100 facilities, collected this year through a survey distributed by I2SL. Check out the module and add your own data to support the tool’s growing reach and impact.

Looking for additional ideas for improvement? Check out the LBT Actionable Insights module! Sponsored by Siemens Smart Infrastructure, the module bridges the gap between benchmarking and action by providing customized energy efficiency project ideas and resources, based on the building data you input. The Laboratory Benchmarking Tool is sponsored by the Federal Energy Management Program at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). It was developed by I2SL, kW Engineering, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Questions and feedback about the tool can be directed to lbt@i2sl.org.
